  • point: (music) the entry, or the first notes, of a musical subject (e.g. in a fugue); a short strain or phrase of music; a call on a musical instrument, especially a military instrument (as in a point of war)
  • counterpoint: (music) polyphony; the combination of two or more separate melodic lines; the term is derived from the Latin phrase punctum contra punctum, "note against note" → see every crowd has its several tones for further commentary on the musical allusions in this paragraph
