  • ECHHCE
  • Chimera: In Greek mythology, Chimera was one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. Descriptions vary – some say it had the body of a goat, the tail of a snake or dragon and the head of a lion, though others say it had heads of both the goat and lion, with a snake for a tail. All descriptions, however, agree that it breathed fire from one or more of its heads.
  • chimera: (biology) an organism with genetically distinct cells originating from two zygotes.
  • chimera: vain, foolish, or incongruous fancy, or creature of the imagination; as, the chimera of an author
  • Bellerophon: Rising on his horse Pegasus, was the great hunter and killer of the chimera, lodging a block of lead inside the Chimera's throat and thus choking it.
  • hunter:Orion
  • eternal chimera hunter: the dreamer, the reader

Commentary

Like the Chimera, the characters of Finnegans Wake are of indeterminate characteristics. Like "chimeras" in the sense "foolish fancy", the dreamer, HCE, and the reader strive to hunt down meaning in an eternal quest.
