The ambiguous crime was pehaps the exposure of HCE's backside in teh park, or the exposure of the private parts of the two girls. If the trial/cross-examination is of Shem or Shaun, as seems to be the case, this might account for reference to HCE's backside as "Father[thyme]'s."
