- How Buckley Shot the Russian General: Mr Frederick A. Buckley, a Dublin raconteur and acquaintance of the Joyce family who reportedly told a story of how he shot a Russian general in the Crimea. In fact, we know that Buckley himself could not have fought in the Crimean Wat, being far too young (born in 1847).
"The story in Finnegans Wake revolves around the Irish soldier Buckley, who holds back from shooting a Russian General ‘at stool’ during the Crimean War in deference to the general’s uniform, but then sees the general wiping himself clean with earth and, disgusted, fires to kill."
"The original of this story has not been found, and may well not – of course – be a ‘real’ story at all."
