  • trochee: a metrical foot used in formal poetry consisting of a long (or accented) syllable followed by a short (or unaccented) one; O carina! O carina! in this sentence consists of four trochees in succession; although rare in English verse, the trochee is fairly common in children's rhymes (such as Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star)
