- Whiskey – 'whiskey' is a shortened form of 'usquebaugh', which English borrowed from Irish Gaelic 'uisce beatha' and Scottish Gaelic 'uisge beatha'. This compound descends from Old Irish 'uisce', 'water' and 'bethad', 'of life', meaning literally “water of life.”
