  • Tear it or leaf it – referring to paper (the letter and the book itself). Here the phrase 'take it or leave it' is reversed; tearing meaning to destroy and discard, and 'leaf it' meaning to browse or read.
  • Tare – n. Any of various weedy plants of the genus Vicia, especially the common vetch. Any of several weedy plants that grow in grain fields.
