I will go back to the great sweet mother - from Swinburne's poem "The Triumph of Time". Misquoted by Mulligan in Ulysses (pg 3) as 'grey sweet mother'. "Isn't the sea what Algy calls it: a grey sweet mother? The snotgreen sea."
