(tunc) dimittis - part of the first line Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace (now let thy servant go in peace, O Lord, in accordance with thy word), from the story in Luke chapter 2 of Simeon and his sighting of the infant Jesus. Simeon had been promised he would see the Messiah before he died.
