- Mary Magdalene The foremost female disciple of Jesus, from whom he cast seven demons. In Church tradition, she was seen as a reformed prostitut, and she became the patroness of "wayward women". In paintings, she is often shown werping in repentance, hence teh word "maudlin", from the French version of her name.
- Magdalen: a college at Oxford university (though Charles Dodgson/:weis Carroll studies and taught at Christ Church, not Magdalen)
