Commentary

In 1933, Joyce hired a private secretary, Madame France Raphael, to transcribe his FW notebooks. In trying to decipher Joyce's handwriting (and speaking very little English), Raphael made a number of transcription errors, most of which Joyce corrected.

However, in one case, Raphael rendered Joyce's handwritten "/\c on vibrating bed" as "/\ convibrating bed." Rather than correcting this error, Joyce adapted the serendipitous rendering as "convibrational."
