  • Rubicon: the ancient Latin name for a small river in northern Italy which formed part of the boundary between the Roman provinces of Cisalpine Gaul and Italia; the expression "crossing the Rubicon", connoting the passage of a point of no return, refers to Julius Caesar's invasion of Ancient Rome, when, on 10 January 49 BC, he led his army across the Rubicon river in violation of Roman law, effectively declaring war on Rome and making conflict inevitable
  • moribund: (of a person) at the point of death.
