  • Lucius Cornelius Balbus the elder: A Ancient Roman financier and politician of Hispanic origin. HE was furst a friend of Pompey, then private secretary of Julius Caesar, and later an asspciate of Octavian (Augustus). He was the first naturalized citizen of Rome to be named consul. Balbus's name was featured in a widely used elementary textbook, Gradatim', an Easy Latin Translation Book. (1881). Children in the 19th century learned to write by copying and translating the Latin sentences and stories about the Romans, and Balbus was one of those Romans.
