  • Commodus: Roman Emperor from 180 to 192, and son of Marcus Aurelius. His reign was marked by political strife and the increasingly arbitrary and capricious behaviour of the emperor himself. Some historians, notably Edward Gibbon, to take Commodus' reign as the beginning of the decline of the Roman Empire.
