- Gregory: name of 16 Roman Catholic popes. One of the most famous was gregor I namedSaint gregory the Great, (c. 540 – 604),well known for his writings, which were more prolific than those of any of his predecessors as pope. He presided over a major reform in the liturgy. Also Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582.
