- pun on Phoenicians. Carthage was a Phoenician city that was utterly destroyed by Rome in the second Punic war (ended 241 B.C.). The Romans so detested the Phoenicians that they sowed salt into the fields so that nothing would ever grow there again.
- Phoenix Park in Dublin, also the mythical Phoenix (ties in with theme of life and sleep cycles and resurrection and waking).
