  • Pit stalls: medium-priced seats located between the stalls and the pit, in this sense synonymous with the British usage of parterre. Contemporary accounts describe them as occupied by “regular workers,” as opposed to either gentry or common folk; their occupants were not expected to dress up but sometimes did.
