  • Vanessa: the name Vanessa was invented by Irish writer Jonathan Swift and given to Esther Vanhomrigh, whom Swift had met in 1708 and whom he tutored; the name was created by taking "Van" from Vanhomrigh's last name and adding "Essa", the pet form of Esther; the name appeared in print for the first time in Cadenus and Vanessa
  • Cadenus and Vanessa: an autobiographical poem by Jonathan Swift about his relationship with Esther Vanhomrigh ; Swift's Stella & Vanessa had the same first name, Esther ("sesthers"); cf. letter, 15/11/26 to Harriet Shaw Weaver; the name Vanessa appeared in print for the first time in Cadenus and Vanessa, which was written by Swift in 1713 but not published until 1726, three years after Vanhomrigh's death
