  • Phoenix Brewery: The third largest brewery in Dublin at the end of the 19th century, it went out of business in 1905, bought out by Guinness, on its way to a Dublin monopoly in beer. The principal drink was Phoenix Porter.

  • 1898 the joke is in giving porter a vintage, as if it were a Bordeaux. 1898 was in fact an exceptional vintage year for claret and champagne.
  • 1798 ‘The Memory of the Dead’ (song) 'Who fears to speak of Ninety-Eight?' (i.e. of the Irish rebellion of 1798)
