  • acropolis: Athens acropolis and temple grounds
  • Prière sur L'Acropole: Ernest Renan, Prayer on the Acropolis (prose poem)
  • a core city (polis): Dublin, Athens, Zurich, Paris, London, Rome, any capital city.
  • a core Paulus: Paulus is the Latin form of the English name "Paul." With Ernest Renan in the mix, this may be a play on St. Paul's central role in spreading the idea that Jesus was divine.
  • Battle of Stalingrad: (1942-1943; post FW, post Joyce) German General Paulus encircled and destroyed by a Russian General, creating a high hill (acro) of 1.7-2 million corpses (German 628k + Russian 1.13m). Oddly enough, the battle ended on what would have been Joyce's 61st birthday, February 2, 1943; but of course, he was already dead and buried in Zurich. This also marked Hitler's high point (acropolis); it was downhill from there.
