  • Adrian: the name of six popes, from which the best known may be Adrian IV. (ca. 1100 – 1159). Born Nicholas Breakspeare, he was the only Englishman to occupy the papal chair. He urged the English king, Henry II, to invade Ireland to bring its Celtic Christian Church under the Roman system and to conduct a general reform of governance and society throughout the island.
