  • Saint Barbara: an early Christian saint (3rd century A.D.) and martyr. the patron saint of artillerymen, military engineers, miners and others who work with explosives because of her old legend's association with lightning, and also of mathematicians.
  • Major Barbsra: the heroine of George Bernard Shaw's 1905 play of the same name/An Officer of The Salvation Army, Major Barbara Undershaft, becomes disillusioned when her Christian denomination accepts money from an armaments manufacturer (her father) and a whisky distiller.
  • Barbarossa: Frederick I Barbarossa] (1122 – 1190) a German Holy Roman Emperor. His name means "red beard" in Italian. A fierce general, he was a leader of the Third Crusade, and died in campaign in Asia Minor. Like Arthur, and Finn MacCool, he is by legend only sleeping in a cave. ready to wake when his ccuntry needs him.
