- Frederick I Barbarossa: (1122 – 1190) a German Holy Roman Emperor. He was crowned by Pope Adrian IV after invadng Italy and overcoming Adrian's opponents. After Adrian's death. Frederick supported Victor IV, an antipope, and was excommunicated by Alexander III, the pope. Frederick later led the Third Crusade, but died after some success in present-day Turkey.
