- Gyges: king of Lydia in the seventh century B.C. He is best known for his ring of invisibility. He is also known for the way in which he deposed King Candaules. According to Herodotus, Candaules insisted upon Gyges peeping at his naked wife, which so enraged her that she gave Gyges the choice of murdering her husband and making himself king, or of being put to death himself.
