Commentary

John Gordon, in Finnegans Wake: A Plot Summary (p.187), interprets this passage (i.e., the paragraph labeled with this margin note from Shaun) as HCE's hearing dripping water, first associating it with Issy and then hearing it as various different listeners might: nuns, a coalman, a wren, a postman, and Issy herself.
