Iris Trees

Jump to navigationJump to search- Iris Tree: a pink haired English actress and writer whom Joyce came to know in Paris
- Iris: the rainbow goddess → rainbows in FW represent the end of conflict after a fall as a sign of gods promise to Noah (HCE) and the seven colours (an important number in FW) representing the members of the household: HCE, ALP, Shem, Shaun and Issy with the addition of either K and S the manservant or Issy's other personality and Tristan → the seven colours combine to make white, the colour of the lily
- Irish History
- iris: a flowering plant → Issy as a flower maiden → fleur-de-lis, heraldic symbol of the French crown, sometimes identified as an iris → the French Royal Coat of Arms has three fleurs-de-lis (Iris Three)
- iris: part of the eye → also identifies Iris Trees with Shaun, who has good eyesight
- trees: Shem is associated with the tree and Shaun with the stone (Shem + Shaun = treestone = Tristan) → Iris Trees combines Shem, Shaun and Issy, just like Lily O'Rangans → Irish Threes = Shem-Shaun-Tristan trio = the three soldiers in the Phoenix Park who are somehow mixed up in HCE's crime
- trees: greenery → Irish and Catholic → ALP
- Iris Trees one half of Issy's split personality → one of the two girls HCE encounters in the park
- can't see the wood for the trees: (phrase) we are being told to stand back and try to see the wood (the big picture) ratherthan the trees
- ii: the ii in Lili is emblematic of Issy in Fw → explained by John Gordon in his A Wake Newslitter monograph "Notes on Issy" (monograph 7, 1982): the two dots of ii = the morse code for I; two i's = 11, a Wakean number of renewal; two i's = the two girls, the dots, their vaginas; two i's = two eyes - Joyce’s daughter Lucia, a primary model for Isabel, was named after St Lucia, patron saint of light and vision, so named as a guardian of superstitious Joyce’s failing vision
