    • This is part of young/old pairing, of old and young woman in this case. "matron" is traditionally a married woman, while "matr" is similar to a number of words for "mother". The reconstructed word for "mother" in the construct language Proto-Indo-European is usually something along the lines of *mat(e)r or *mEt(e)r, where 'E' represents a schwa (stressless central) vowel.
