  • New yoke: After WWI and the end of Austria-Hungary, the South Slavs formed Jugoslavia, effectively trading the yoke of Austria-Hungary for the new yoke of Yugoslavia. It wasn't until after the wars of the 1990s that all yokes were off. Joyce lived 15 years in Trieste, Austria-Hungary, very close to Yugoslavia.
