In Sura 24 of the Koran, God's light is compared to a lamp enclosed within a glass. This reminds Joyce of an electric lightbulb; hence the references to "a mirage in a merror ... muzzinmessed for one watthour ... bottlefilled...."
J. S. Atherton comments, "It will be noticed that there is an error in the mirror; the Koran is quoted only to be confuted, for Joyce remain - as the authors of The Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake have pointed out - a good son of mother Church, in some ways, even though he had left his church."
