  • Court of Common Pleas, or Common Bench: a common law court in the English legal system that covered "common pleas"; actions between subject and subject, which did not concern the king.
  • May/If it please the court: A phrase of deference in an oral argument in court. The judge is thought of as synonymous with the court, and the bench, the judge's seat in the courtroom, is in turn thought of as synonymous with the judge.
