Reducing of records to ashes

• The National Archives of Ireland were destroyed in 1922 when the Provisional Government bombarded the Four Courts, which anti-treaty forces had occupied and which housed the archives — the opening skirmish in the Irish Civil War. Over one thousand years of official Irish records, including those from every census up to 1921, were lost.
