  • looking glass: a mirror (L/R split) → Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found ThereIssy's vanity glass in which her split personality is reflected
  • shamrock: a three-leafed Irish plant supposedly used by St Patrick to demonstrate the mystery of Holy Trinity to Irish converts → in FW the shamrock's trefoil seems to represent Shem, Shaun and the combined Shem-Shaun character
  • rock grass → in FW the twin sons Shem and Shaun are identified with stem and stone, hence rocking grasses contains an allusion to Shaun and Shem respectively → cf. stone pine → one of the most prominent aspects of the combined Shem-Shaun character is Tristan, i.e. tree-stone
