- serfs of the glebe
- serf: an agricultural laborer bound under the feudal system to work on his lord's estate. Serfs who occupied a plot of land were required to work for the lord of the manor who owned that land, and in return were entitled to protection, justice and the right to exploit certain fields within the manor to maintain their own subsistence. Russia was the last European power to free its serfs, in 1861; hence, during the Crimean War (1853-56), serfdom was still an ongoing concern.
- glebe: an area of land within an ecclesiastical parish used to support a parish priest. (There are over 100 townlands in Ireland called Glebe.)
