  • Vae Victis (Latin): "Woe to the vanquished." Livy, in Ab Urbe Condita, recorded this as a quote by Brennus, leader of the army of Gauls that captured most of Rome in 390 BC. He demanded 1,000 pounds of gold from the Romans as a ransom for their city; when they protested that the scales were biased in Brennus's favor, this was his reply.
