  • Volapük: a constructed language intended as an international standard, much like Esperanto. It was created in 1879–1880 by Johann Martin Schleyer, a Roman Catholic priest in Baden, Germany. At one time, the language boasted over a million adherents, with a large set of books, periodicals, dictionaries, and clubs.
