A Protestant, Henry inherited the French throne in 1589; however, the Catholic League, an anti-Protestant faction in Europe that included Pope Sixtus V and King Philip II of Spain, refused to recognize him as the rightful king. After four years of conflict, Henry converted in 1593 to Catholicism, allegedly with the explanation "Paris is worth the Mass."
